Moving into a newly built or refurbished house is a very exciting time, especially after the anticipation of waiting for your moving-in day. Over the following days, weeks and months there are many tasks that will need to be done for you to get fully settled. But which should take priority, and which can be left and done quickly?
Here are the top 3 tasks to consider when you move in:
A Deep Clean
It is necessary to plan for a thorough cleaning of your home before you fully settle in. You should make time to clean your house before you get all of your belongings moved in as this will make it much easier. It is a good idea to move all belongings into self-storage to make the process as swift as possible. As you begin to clean make sure that you check for any surface damage to walls and fixtures. Begin to create a snagging list and see that all repairs are dealt with after the first year.
Climatise Your Home
As a new home or newly refurbished home, it will be necessary for it to settle. Factors such as the heat and cold contribute to sinkage, so it is advisable to not go blasting the heat too often in the first few months. Hold off painting the walls and adding new decorations as movement could mean that you will need to repeat or touch up again unnecessarily. You may also notice extra condensation appearing for the first few months. This is completely normal as the house dries. It’s best practice to make sure you keep some windows, vents and doors open as often as you can. Efflorescence can also appear on the exterior of houses– this is a salty substance that appears on brickwork. It is completely normal and can be easily brushed/wiped off.
Landscape Your Garden
New build gardens are often a blank canvas, usually a patio followed by a lawned area. Create design to even the smallest of areas and make it a haven to enjoy. It is best to begin work on your garden straight away as it often takes much longer than expected. Consider planting as soon as possible, as plants can take many years to reach full maturity.
